LLS Orchestra: Ravel and the Colors of Sound The Eli and Edythe Broad Stage, Santa Monica

On April 11, the LLS Orchestra returns to its second home, The Broad Stage in Santa Monica, for an immersive evening where music meets visual art—a celebration of color, imagination, and orchestral brilliance.

At the heart of the program is the luminous sound world of Maurice Ravel, a true “painter in sound.” The evening opens with Le Tombeau de Couperin, a refined and elegant homage to the French Baroque, followed by Une Barque sur l’océan, a mesmerizing seascape in sound—waves unfolding in endless motion, shimmering with light and color.

After intermission, the orchestra presents Michael Daugherty’s Reflections on the Mississippi, featuring our outstanding Principal Tuba, Nathan Swift—a vibrant and evocative concerto that transforms the tuba into a lyrical, virtuosic, and deeply expressive solo voice.

The program culminates in one of the most breathtaking orchestral works ever written: Daphnis et Chloé, Suite No. 2—from the mystical stillness of dawn to the radiant, ecstatic “Danse générale,” a true explosion of orchestral color and energy.

With over 80 musicians on stage, including an expanded percussion section, expect extraordinary sonic depth—music that surrounds, lifts, and transports.

Arrive early for a special artistic prelude: an exhibition by our Artist-in-Residence, Sheele Maeda, whose work reflects a rich and deeply personal artistic journey. Enjoy her paintings alongside pre-concert chamber music, with drinks and light fare on the patio as you gather with our community before the performance.

An evening where sound becomes color—and music becomes an experience.
